In the NCTTA Regional Tournament that took place in Monroeville, Pennsylvania on April 4-6, 2014, Xixi Guo and Vivien Zhou have won Women’s Doubles, retrieving the title again from 2012. They have overcome the first seed from Princeton, formed by Canadian two-time champion Shirley Fu and multi-time US Olympian Ariel Hsing in the semi-finals, considered as the biggest upset of the whole tournament:

In the final match, Xixi Guo and Vivien Zhou again demonstrated their dominance over the table against the UC-Berkeley pair, Hwang and Guo:

Congratulations to University of Toronto’s Table Tennis Team in the 2014 NCTTA Regionals

March 1st, 2014 · No Comments

In the NCTTA Regional Tournament that took place in Akron, OH on Feb. 22nd, 2014 (Sat.), U of T table tennis team has demonstrated its dominance in the Great Lake regions again by winning two golds, one silver and one bronze.

Coed team has faced two intense duels against Michigan State in the semis and Buffalo in the finals, both leading to the deciding fifth doubles match. But they survived from both with the strong team spirit and regained the regional champion title. The women’s team, consist of only three players: Vivien Zhou, Roxana Pao and Xixi Guo, made a miracle by making to the finals without losing a single match. Unfortunately, the fully equipped western women’s team stopped us from the champion dream in the finals. In the single’s tournament, Vivien Zhou proved her governance on the women’s side by a clear 3-0 against Western’s best player Rongge in the  final. In the Men’s Singles tournament, Alireza Ta had a close fight against Keith Pech in the semi-final and placed third. The full results can be found from here.

NCTTA 2012-2013: UofT’s Story Thus Far

February 24th, 2013 · Comments Off on NCTTA 2012-2013: UofT’s Story Thus Far

Last year was a year to remember for the University of Toronto Table Tennis Team. Both the co-ed (mens) and womens performed superbly, achieving our best results ever since joining the NCTTA. This year, with the loss of some of our best players to UofT academic pressure/stress and graduation, but gaining the return of a couple former veteran players, we have almost an entirely different team filling into our last years’ success.

Though having traversed down a much more turbulent path than our past year, the UofT team did manage to achieve recognition in its right this year, despite the adversity.

Fall – The fall divisionals proved to be a very competitive tournament, with Toronto, Waterloo and Western tied for first in the Co-ed team standings and our women team coming in 2nd after a surprisingly strong showing from Western.
Winter – The winter divisionals was an unfortunate tournament for the UofT team as a number of our team members were sidelined due to the cold, flu and other illnesses. Our co-ed team only won one match, coming in 2nd overall with both divisional results combined and the women team (barely a team with only 3 players, 1 short of a full team) failed to win a single match, placing also 2nd with both tournmanent results combined. The bright side of the winter divisionals came from our singles showing, with Ran Zhao and Roxana Pao winning the men and women singles tournament respectively, as well as Xixi Guo coming in 3rd in the womens singles.

Our regional tournament this year was also a different scenario from last year, featuring the return of an ever dominant U Ottawa and former powerhouse Cornell; but missing from the picture included Ohio and Michigan’s top teams Ohio State and U Michigan respectively. The mens singles lacked authority, with none of the region’s top 5 male players participating, but was made up by a cutthroat womens singles tournament. At the end of this tournament, our co-ed team placed a decent 2nd, behind Ottawa, but edged ahead of Western, to avenge our divisonal loss, and Cornell; our women team came in at a respectable 4th (again with only 3 players); Ran Zhao placed 4th in the mens singles; Roxana Pao and Xixi Guo repeating their divisional results, coming in 1st and 3rd respectively again.

Congratulations to Ran, Roxana and Xixi for their amazing finish in the singles tournaments and a giant thank you to both our co-ed and women teams for an amazing result and role-model tenacity.

Although all our teams and singles participants once again qualified for the National Championships in April, it is still undecided whether we will participate as it will be taking place right in the middle of UofT’s final exams. Regardless of whether UofT has a presence at this tournament, we would like thank all the team members for another great season and a wonderful display of our UofT and table tennis spirit.

2012 NCTTA National Championships

April 16th, 2012 · Comments Off on 2012 NCTTA National Championships

Sunday April 15, 2012

After an uneventful Saturday, where all of our singles players were knocked out early for both the men and women singles tournament, in the toughest NCTTA singles field to date, both the co-ed/mens and womens teams looked to step up our play on Sunday’s team finals. After a stressful and competitive day, both Toronto teams return home having placed exactly where they were seeded entering the tournament. Final team results:

Womens: 2nd
Co-ed/Mens: 5th

Congrats to the women team for winning a third 2nd place finish, and the co-ed team for once again placing top 5 in North America.

Friday April 13, 2012

Friday was a good a good day for UofT. Both the co-ed and women teams won all their respective round robin matches for the day, and all our singles players successfully advanced as expected (if not already seeded). Despite the smooth sailing, nothing trumped the highlight our women double’s pair.

Pair of Vivien Zhou and Pei Pei Zheng

Congrats to Vivien and Pei Pei for this outstanding achievement. Now officially the best intercollegiate women’s doubles pair in North America, the pair received this well deserved and hard fought win through grit, passion and determination, battling back from a 0-2 deficit to win the finals match 3-2 sets.

This is the University of Toronto’s first ever win at the NCTTA National Championship and is also a first for all of Canada.
